I Wish I Would Have Known Series 5:

Adult Life - Mental Health Deep Dive

🗣”One thing that is very key to understand is that we are enough. Everything happens on your own personal timing. So whether you are 20, whether you are 30, whether you are 40, 50, 60, whatever that may be, you should never look at someone else’s success as your own personal success, right, because we all have our own personal timing.” - Shamawn Wright @s._wright

📱Social media is a fun outlet for many of us to express ourselves. However, it can also cause us to compare ourselves to others and affect our mental health.

✨It’s important to remember that people post and share things that they want us to see. What we see on social media is edited, filtered, and decisively chosen. Our timelines and feeds are filled with “end products” not the “process” of how people got to where they are.

⏰ Everyone struggles and succeeds in their own time, so know that you are not behind or running late. You are right on time.

Here are 4 tips to help you achieve a healthy relationship with social media, focus on your timeline, and strengthen your mental health:

🧹Clean up your feed. Follow people who bring you joy or informative and valuable content. Unfollow those who don’t.

📸Remind yourself that social media is showing you “end products” not the “process” behind it.

🛀Try a social media cleanse or only allow yourself a limited amount of scrolling time.

🥰Remind yourself that you are exactly where you need to be right now.

🗣 “I actually used to have a really hard time with internalizing my feelings. I would just let them boil and boil and boil until one day, at any given random moment, it will explode. I really realized this once I started going to therapy. And my therapist really helped me learn how to express my feelings to my loved ones and know that they should love me for my feelings as well.” - Deanna Bratton @deabratt

Why do people suppress or hide their emotions?

🤔If you could have a conversation with your younger self, what would you say? What advice would you give yourself? What do you wish you would have known?

🗣Kathleen Hinkson @beingleen would tell her younger self these 2 things:

🧘🏾‍♀️Be unafraid of sitting in your emotions

🙅🏾‍♀️Don’t Rush

✨Kathleen can’t go back in time to talk to her younger self, but she can share her knowledge with YOU.

👉🏾Now here is what you can do:

🤗💚Sit with, be present, and accept your feelings. Do not sweep them under the rug or push them down.

💡Change your perspective. Try to view your thoughts and feelings from different angles. Reframe difficult situations, mistakes, and failures as learning experiences. Take the time to process and grow. Do this by reflecting and asking yourself questions such as :

💭What did I learn from this situation?

💭What can I do differently next time?

💭How can I best support myself at this moment?

🏋🏾‍♀️If this is uncomfortable, that is okay. Just as you get stronger by physically working out, your mind will get stronger when you mentally and emotionally work out. 💪🏾🧠🧘🏾‍♀️

✅Start taking these steps to strengthen your mental health so you won’t have to say, “I wish I would have known.”
